Billingham Go 9 Points Clear Following a 11 Try Win Over Scunthorpe

Mike Brown28 Nov 2022 - 14:42

We Continue To Build!

Billingham welcomed league newcomers Scunthorpe to Greenwood Road. It is always difficult when coming against a team that you havent played before. It is always the unknown.

As we previewed, Scunthorpe clearly showed their attacking prowess with the amount of points they were scoring however it seemed that their defence was susceptible to points being scored against them.

It was a true Autumns day...and Billingham were straight out of the blocks. Conner Foley setting the tone with a quick snipe taking play up to the oppositions half way only to be penalised for holding on.

On 4 minutes, Billingham attacked the left side of the field when a stray hand knocked the ball on, adjudged to be deliberate from the referee and Scunthorpe saw yellow.

Billingham continued their attack and from a scrum 5 metres out, Anth Jackson picked from the base and fed captain Elliott Husband who darted in from close rage. Conversion missed. 5-0

Scunthorpe started to get into the game however for their own mistakes and continual Billingham pressure they were not able to capatlise.

On 23 mins Conner Foley fed Luke Wilson who stepped back inside. Cleverly he took on two defenders before offloading to the support player, Anth Jackson to score. Peter Evans converted 12-0

On 36 minutes. Billinghams lineout was taken by Dan Burns. Quick ball from Foley saw Jobe Roxby carry it up. A quick ruck saw the ball find Peter Evans who fed Anth Jackson on the inside who attacked the full back and as he took contact off loaded to Peter Youll, who with a juggle managed to ground the ball. Jobe Roxby converted. 19-0

Just before half time, Billingham were on the attack again. Conner Foley showing the Scunthorpe defence a clean pair of heels as he darted over the line. 24 -0

At half time the bonus point was in the bag.... however more was to come.

As the second half started, Billingham were once again on the attack with dynamic hooker Jordan Foulds getting on the scoresheet. Conversion was missed. 29-0

As Billingham the club, on 60 minutes, Youll and Burns combined to set up a ruck on the half way line to the of the posts. Evans then fed Mike Walton who burst through 2 defenders drawing the last man and passing to Peter Evans who scampered under the posts. 36-0

As soon as Scunthorpe kicked off, Billingham were on the attack again. This time it was an Evans/Wilson combo. Evans fed back inside to Wilson on Billingham 22 metre line. Wilson turned the full back inside out leaving the full back in a heap. In what would have been a run in for Wilson, he opted for the quick feet of Peter Evans to score his second of the game. 41-0

Scunthorpe now with their heads down could only prevent Billingham getting on the scoresheet again for minutes. Billingham camped on the tryline before Foley fed Mike Whinn in full flight to score. Jobe Roxby converted 48-0

Next on the score sheet was Luke Wilson who was the one in support this time. A break through middle saw Conner Foley tackled just short of the line before offloading to Wilson to score. Jobe Roxby converted 55-0

The clock couldnt have come sooner for Scunthorpe but Billingham had other plans. Returning Ben Walton found a gap in the middle of the pitch, a last ditch tackle saw Walton caught short but for Joe Ross to be on hand to score. Conversion missed 60-0

With a minute on the clock Billingham had one last attack. Dixon bull dozing his way through defenders saw a great platform. Billingham were now camped on the line. The ball could have gone either way but it was the quick thinking Jordan Foulds who with help of his peers crashed the line. Jobe Roxby converted ending the game 67-0

Scunthorpe really did compete throughout the game and the scoreline flattered Billingham.... it is scary to know that there is a full 80 minute performance still to come.

We are now at the half way stage in the fixtures so we caught up with Peter Evans to get his take on events so far this season 'Obviously very pleased to be sitting top of a competitive league at the half way stage. We have been here before and delivered but also faltered, I believe we are a different squad now. You can judge that by the strength of our second team, who are mirroring our fixtures and barring the odd slip up have been excellent this season.
We honestly haven’t had a complete performance yet, which is a scary thought given the potential we still have to show. We have a massive December coming up where we are treating each game as a cup final. We aren’t looking any further than the following Saturday. We set our goals at the start of the season and we have set some high standards to which we must keep hitting. An incredibly exciting time for all at the club.'

Next up is York away. Our closest game. Come and support!
